3D Pop-Out Characters

Description: We created a 3D pop-out scene with a partner for this activity. We first learned some vocabulary that was important when creating our project. Then with our partner we drew a background scene and two characters. My partner and I got prairie for our background and our characters were an orange and turtle. My partner and I first decided to use brown construction paper for our background and folded it in half. Next, we drew lines on the paper where we would want our characters to be, to cut out the pop-out pieces for our characters. We then started designing and drawing our characters and background. My partner and I drew grass, a tumbleweed, a prairie dog, night sky, moon, and stars for our background and we also cut out a picnic basket and blanket using red construction paper and glued it to our background. We then each created our characters using different colored construction paper. Once our characters were finished and cut out, I cut out the pop-out pieces of our scene and glued each character onto the paper so when you fold the paper, the characters look 3D. After everyone was finished, each group explained their scenes and what they created.

Extension Activity: An extension activity could be to have students write a short story about their characters and background. In their story, students would have to write a quick one to two paragraph with a beginning, middle, and an end that involves their characters and background. It can be made up or realistic, but it's a great way to have students be creative in their writing. Afterwards, students can share their stories if they want to or the class can do a little gallery walk and see both their writing and pop-out scenes.
