Clay Mosiac Tiles

Description: We created mosiac tiles using air dry clay. We first began by brainstorming and drawing out ideas for our tiles and what represented us on a clay tile template. Then the teachers demonstrated each of the techniques and what was required when creating our own clay tile. Some of the techniques discussed and modeled were wedging, rolling, slip and scoring, and adding and subtracting clay. We then were able to wedge our own clay and roll out our slabs. We then took our clay tile template that we drew on and used it to shape out our tile size. Once we cut out our tile, we used the different techniques to create our designs on our tiles. We needed to include one element of adding clay, one element of subtracting clay, and the last element was one of our choosing. I added the letter R for my name, and subtracted clay to add mountains, a sun, and squiggles in the right corners. We then painted our tiles any color that we wanted. I chose blue for the background and the R, because it's my favorite color, and then painted the sun yellow and the mountains gray and white.

Extension Activity: An extension activity could be to have a big classroom mosiac tile. The teacher would make a big clay tile. Students would then either add or subtract from the clay tile a design that best represents them. Once all the students have a design on the tile, the teacher or students can paint it, and once it dries, the classroom will have a mosiac tile that represents everyone in that classroom and can be put to display.
