3D Pop-Out Characters

Image
Description: We created a 3D pop-out scene with a partner for this activity. We first learned some vocabulary that was important when creating our project. Then with our partner we drew a background scene and two characters. My partner and I got prairie for our background and our characters were an orange and turtle. My partner and I first decided to use brown construction paper for our background and folded it in half. Next, we drew lines on the paper where we would want our characters to be, to cut out the pop-out pieces for our characters. We then started designing and drawing our characters and background. My partner and I drew grass, a tumbleweed, a prairie dog, night sky, moon, and stars for our background and we also cut out a picnic basket and blanket using red construction paper and glued it to our background. We then each created our characters using different colored construction paper. Once our characters were finished and cut out, I cut out the pop-out pieces of our ...

Clay Mosiac Tiles

Image
Description: We created mosiac tiles using air dry clay. We first began by brainstorming and drawing out ideas for our tiles and what represented us on a clay tile template. Then the teachers demonstrated each of the techniques and what was required when creating our own clay tile. Some of the techniques discussed and modeled were wedging, rolling, slip and scoring, and adding and subtracting clay. We then were able to wedge our own clay and roll out our slabs. We then took our clay tile template that we drew on and used it to shape out our tile size. Once we cut out our tile, we used the different techniques to create our designs on our tiles. We needed to include one element of adding clay, one element of subtracting clay, and the last element was one of our choosing. I added the letter R for my name, and subtracted clay to add mountains, a sun, and squiggles in the right corners. We then painted our tiles any color that we wanted. I chose blue for the background and the R, bec...

Printmaking Ornaments

Image
Description: For this project, we learned about the history of printmaking and the tools and terms that go with and into making prints. For this printmkaing, we created ornaments. We sketched two different ornament designs that represented us on a piece of paper. I chose to draw mountains because I love to hike and think the mountains are pretty. My second design I drew swirls and dots that represent ornaments that my family uses on the tree for Christmas. We then drew our designs on styrofoam by putting our drawing on top of it and traced our drawing to transfer it to the styrofoam. When tracing, we had to trace firmly to make sure that our designs indented into the styrofoam for our designs to show through. When we were done tracing, we cut out our ornaments. Then we went to stations where the ink was all ready for us. We used a brayer and rolled it in ink and then rolled it onto our styrofoam design. We then put the inked design on our piece of construction paper and put a bla...

2D Snowflakes

Image
Description: For this activity, we talked about what snowflakes are and how each one is different and unique. We followed each teachers snowflake design and then we were able to create our own. The two snowflakes on top are the teachers designs and the bottom on is the one that I created. After cutting out our snowflakes, we glued all three of them on blue construction paper in any way we wanted our snowflakes to be displayed. Once we finished glueing them on, we used glue to create designs on the snowflake that we created. We then put salt all over the glued design to create a textured frozen look. After we put salt on our snowflake we used watercolors to add color to the salt. I lightly used the blue watercolor to create a light blue color for mine. When everyone was done, we did a gallery walk with everyone's snowflake and had to write three things that we noticed or liked in our peers snowflake designs.  Extension Activity: An extension activity could be integrating scie...

Stained Glass Turkeys

Image
Description: This activity, we first learned what stain glass is. Then to create our turkeys, we use painter's tape to make the head and feathers of the turkey. We also used a skinnier tape to make the different sections in each of the feathers. After we were done taping, we painted the feathers. We had to have two primary colors, two tints, and two secondary colors. My primary colors that I did were red and yellow. My secondary colors were green and orange. My tints were the light blue and light green. Some other colors that I did were black and purple. Once we finished the feathers, we then added a beak and eyes to our turkey's face. Once the paint was dry, we were able to peel off all the tape and reveal our painting.  Extension Activity: An extension activity could be to have students write a short story about their turkey and a trip that it went on. Students will name their turkey and come up with a wild story that their turkey did on a random trip that the students com...

Zentangle Pumpkin

Image
Description: We first learned about what zentangle patterns are and viewed some examples while being able to practice creating our own patterns. We needed to create one pattern that represents who we are and one that represents fall. Once we finished practicing, we drew our pumpkin outline with a black sharpie, following the steps of the teacher who was demonstrating each step. After we finished doing our outline, we had to fill in each section with a pattern, including our fall and personal one. We drew our patterns in crayons and I did spiders, vertical and horizontal lines, swirls, flowers, and dots. Once we were done, we used orange watercolor for the pumpkin and brown watercolor for the stem. Once we were done, we cut out our pumpkin following the outline and shared with a partner our designs and why we chose them.  Extension Activity: An extension activity would be to have students write about the different patterns that they drew and why they chose them. This is a gre...

Hidden Safari

Image
Description: For this activity, we learned how it is easier to draw upside down since you are focusing on the lines and not on the entire picture. We first had to select an animal that is found in a safari. We then had to lightly draw our selected animal upside down with a blue colored pencil. Once we finished drawing our animal, we used warm colors (red, orange, yellow) to draw at least three different patterns over our drawing of the animal, so that our animal was hidden. It's important to draw the animal in a cool color and use warm colors for the patterns over it because we then used red glassees to look at our work, and the patterns would 'disappear' and you can vividly see the animal drawing. After we finished our patterns, we had to write three clues about our animal on an index card.   Extension Activity: An extension activity that I can do is, have students research about the animal that they drew for this project. They will have a list of requirements that the...
